Support Coordination and Specialist Support Coordination are both designed to help NDIS participants implement their plans, but they are intended for different levels of complexity and risk.
Understanding the difference can help you make sense of your funding and ensure you receive the right level of support.
Support Coordination helps participants:
Understand their NDIS plan
Connect with appropriate service providers
Build confidence to manage supports over time
Work towards greater independence
This level of coordination is often suitable when needs are more stable and risks are lower.
Specialist Support Coordination is designed for participants with more complex situations, where additional expertise is required.
This may include:
Higher levels of risk
Multiple service systems involved, such as health, housing, or justice
Significant barriers to accessing or maintaining supports
Specialist Support Coordinators have advanced skills and experience to manage complex arrangements and challenges.
The type of coordination funded in your plan is determined by the NDIA based on:
Your goals
The complexity of your needs
Identified risks
What is considered reasonable and necessary
There are no automatic rules. A participant’s needs may change over time, and coordination supports can be adjusted at plan reviews
Yes. Some participants may start with Specialist Support Coordination and move to Support Coordination as situations stabilise. Others may require specialist support during periods of increased complexity.
Your support team can help identify when a change may be appropriate.
