What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred approach that aims to improve quality of life by understanding the purpose of behaviours of concern and developing practical strategies that support the participant’s individual needs.

Rather than focusing only on changing behaviour, Positive Behaviour Support considers the participant’s strengths, environment, communication, relationships and everyday experiences to identify strategies that promote meaningful participation and reduce the need for restrictive practices where appropriate.

At Support Agency, our Behaviour Support Practitioners work collaboratively with participants, families, carers and other professionals to develop supports that are practical, evidence-informed and tailored to each person’s goals.

How Positive Behaviour Support May Help

Positive Behaviour Support may assist participants to work towards goals related to:

Understanding behaviours of concern

Developing communication strategies

Supporting emotional regulation

Increasing independence in everyday activities

Building positive relationships

Improving community and daily involvement

Reducing the use of restrictive practices where appropriate

Supporting quality of life
